Projects for approx 11 year olds?
Anybody have suggestions for projects (3D modelling, Karel, whatever) that have worked out well as one-session activities for kids around 11? Most of what I’ve been able to find on my own either doesn’t suit our drop-in context or is too hard for younger kids.
I found that kids of varying age had fun with the beginner Karel program, though after a while those that showed a proficiency wanted more of a challenge.
That sounds like a good idea! I’ll try that out on them this coming session and see if it works better. They liked Python I but it was very difficult and we got a lot of attrition based on it being just too hard.
Dear jssalsma, children are sometimes eager to play around with 3D modelling. It is necessary to show them the manual or even print it our, first. This NCLab 3d Modelling app video might be useful, too.
Hi all, Karel worked out really well. We had ages about 6 to 14, and they were all able to have some success and grasp some concepts, although the older end went faster/got farther.
If you have a 3D printer, you could try the card and pendant (medallion) project. It would take more than one session because of the time needed to print the pendants. More detailed information about the process is in Webinar 5
Here is the lesson plan for the card and pendant:
